Choose Water Filters for Your RV Trip
por Dr. Jonathan Doyle - Updated March 08, 2021
As the spring is approaching and the country begins to reopen from the lockdowns, many people start to plan for their first exciting RV adventure of the year.
In order to make the RV trip safe and comfortable, RVers would prepare for life necessities, gear and hacks which might be needed in advance.
Getting access to tasty, safe, clean water is one of the most important issues to deal with on an RV tour.
Most campgrounds provide chlorinated city water while others may provide well water for the use of RVs, you will never know what kind of water you will get access to on your road. If you don’t want to drink water with a strong chlorine taste or shower in cloudy water, a water filter for RV use is a must-have.
Why do you need an RV water filter?
An RV water filter could greatly enhance your water drinking and using experience on your RV trip. The water from hookups at campsites or picnic areas may be full of substances like sediment, rust, large particulate matters, chlorine taste and odor. An RV water filter could filter out those unwanted matters outside of your water.
Some RV filters that are used before water enters your RV could help to protect your RV pipes and valves from getting abraded by sediment, rust, and other harmful substances in water, and prolong the life of your RV’s equipment and internal plumbing systems. Therefore, it saves you much in terms of RV maintenance.
Different Types of RV Water Filters
There are mainly two kinds of RV water filters based on how they are used——external RV water filter and internal RV filter.
External RV Water Filter
External RV inline water filters are attached to your water hose and process all water that would be pumped into your RV tanks. The filtered water can be used for drinking, showering, etc.
1. RV inline water filter
Waterdrop RV inline filter takes a compact design that composite several filter media like carbon block, KDF, fluoride remover in one filter. It could effectively reduce sediments, rust, large particulates, as well as chlorine taste and odors in city water or well water.
The filter has an anti-kink flexible hose protector and can be attached to any standard 3/4" water hose, so you do not have to worry about water leaks when you filter water.
This filter is a nice RV gear for RVers for the high filtration efficiency at a very affordable price of only $16.99. With a three months long service life, it could provide you with clean and safe filtered water throughout the entire RV season.
2. King Tank Gravity-fed Water Filter System
The King Tank Water filter system is a gravity-fed filter consisting of an upper and lower chamber. The upper chamber takes in the contaminated water, while the lower chamber is where the contaminated water is filtered. Because the gravity-fed water filter does not require plumbing or electricity to function, it is convenient and perfect for use in an RV.
The Waterdrop King Tank water filter is a stainless-steel gravity filter with a 2.25-gallon capacity. With this capacity, the filter is ideal for providing water both indoors and outdoors for a 4-person family.
Internal RV Water Filter
As the name suggests, the internal RV water filters are used inside an RV. The internal water filter can filter water on the road, so you do not have to stop and wait for the filtered water to fill in your water tank.
1. Countertop Water Filter Pitcher
Countertop filters like water filter pitcher are very simple filters that are used inside your RV or motorhome.
Waterdrop water filter pitchers take carbon blocks and other filter media like KDF, resin to reduce sediment, rust, chlorine taste and odor as well as other most often found harmful substances in water.
The pro of the countertop water filter pitchers is that they are very compact and portable, so you can take them everywhere. The con of the water filter pitchers is that they don't have a big capacity and need to be replaced very often.
2. Under-Sink UF Water Filters
An under-sink ultrafiltration filter unit is an excellent means of getting clean and filtered water on your RV trip
Waterdrop smart under-sink ultrafiltration TSU system takes a sleek design, saves a lot of under-sink space and gives you more room for storage on your RV.
Constructed by ultrafiltration membranes with a tiny pore size of 0.1 microns, the UF filters could significantly remove rust, sediment, chlorine taste and odor, benzene, bacteria in water whereas retaining the dissolved minerals beneficial to human bodies.
It also has an extended lifespan of up to two years, so you don’t have to replace it very often.
The drawback of the UF filter is that although the system retains beneficial minerals in water, it doesn't reduce TDS. So if the source water you are going to treat has already exceeded the ideal TDS level(500PPM as recommended by the US), reverse osmosis would be better.

3. Reverse Osmosis System
Reverse osmosis systems are known for providing the cleanest water on earth, a compact RO system without a tank is the nice solution to treat your drinking water on your RV trip.
The Waterdrop modern RO system comes with a tankless design, so it wouldn’t take much room in your RV. With a superfine membrane pore size of 0.0001 microns, the system could get rid of harmful substances including large particles and super fine microorganisms like viruses, bacteria, provide you with an ultra safe water experience on your RV trip.
However, the only drawback of the RO system is that it would produce a certain amount of waste water in the process of producing filtered water. The wastewater generated through reverse osmosis may quickly fill your camper’s grey water tank. Thus, it’s necessary to choose a system that generates less waste water——drain ratio at 1:1 or lower would be ideal.
It would be hard to choose a water filtration system from so many kinds of products in the market especially for new RVers. But once you know the difference between those products, the choice would be clear. Hope this guide could help you to make better choices!
