How to change or replace GE refrigerator water filter?

1. Grasp the filter and turn it to the left until it stops, while gently pulling downward from the filter head. (If the filter doesn't come loose easily, air may be trapped inside. To relieve any pressure, push in on the water dispenser; the filter should drop right out.)
2. Remove and discard the plastic cap from the new filter. Fill the top of the replacement filter with water from the tap. Place the filter inside the cartridge holder by aligning the arrow on your filter with the cartridge holder. Push the filter gently upward to engage the top of the cartridge in the filter head.
3. Slowly turn the filter to the right until the filter cartridge stops turning.
4. After the filter has been replaced, trapped air must be purged out of the system. Select Water on the dispenser selector and press the pad until water begins to flow. The first few ounces of water may sputter due to air in the replacement filter. Continue to dispense approximately 1-2 gallons of water to make sure all air is purged from the system.

Why is my GE refrigerator water dispenser not working?

If your GE refrigerator water dispenser doesn’t work, the primary reasons usually are freezing of the water tank and water filter issues.
1. When the supply tube is frozen, which causes a breakdown of a fridge’s water dispenser, it’ll be tough to verify. Look at all connections precisely at the bottom or top of your refrigerator’s door. Try to dismantle the hose and blow warm air through the tube to remove clogs from the dispenser.
2. On some GE refrigerators there is a FRID reader. So, if you buy an aftermarket water filter which doesn’t have a RFID chip, the whole water filter system will not work.

How to solve GE refrigerator water filter problems?

Refrigerators with control panels have an LED in the water filter button that glows when the filter needs to be replaced. After replacing the filter, push this button and hold it for three seconds to reset the filter sensor. If the refrigerator has a touch screen, select Filter from the main menu and press Reset.
If your GE refrigerator water dispenser isn't working after replacing the filter, the reasons should be as below.
1. If your old refrigerator water filter worked and water flowed from the dispenser normally, but after installing a new water filter the water is only a trickle from the dispenser, try reinstalling the old filter to see if the cause of the issue is the new filter.
2. Check to be sure nothing is blocking the water filter. Check that the threaded area where the filter will connect to the refrigerator has nothing blocking the small holes where the water will flow through. Sometimes part of the wrapping on the new filter itself could possibly block the water flow.
3. The new water filter you installed may not be fully screwed into the filter head. If the filter is not fully threaded into the head, low flow or a trickle can occur. Make sure you have the filter tightened properly. Remove the filter completely and reinstall making sure it is tight.
4. There may be a seal/gasket on your refrigerator water filter head causing the issue. When you removed the old filter and replaced it with the new filter, it may have moved the gasket/seal. The seal is there to get the filter on air tight so no leaks occur. If applicable, pull off the gasket/seal and reinstall it. Then install the new filter.
5. Your water filter may be installed too less or too more. You can try to dispense water while at the same time slightly unscrewing and tightening the filter at the same time. By doing this you are trying to find the exact position needed to let the filter operate properly. Sometimes the water filter has to be to an exact position in the filter head for the water from the dispenser to flow correctly.
6. You may have air trapped in the lines. A hammering noise is a good indication that you have air trapped in the lines. This can happen when a new water filter is installed. The air creates a gap or pressure issue and the water does not flow out of the dispenser. You will get a slight trickle or nothing at all from the dispenser. Your newer fridge should have come with a bypass plug. This plug can be used in the water filter housing to completely bypass the filter. Install the bypass plug and run water for 3 minutes to clear any air or pressure issues in the water lines. Once water flows properly from the dispenser, wet your new filter and reinstall it. Test it by running water for a few minutes to be sure air is out of the lines.
7. You may need to wet the new filter before installing it. Sometimes once they are installed the water pressure has a hard time soaking the inside of the filter. By getting it wet before install, you are helping the filter by saturating it first. Soak it in water and reinstall to see if that will fix your problem.
8. You need to buy RPWFE or XWFE. Some fridge uses radio frequency identification (RFID) to monitor the filter status. The RFID chip on the filter detects when a wrong or non-genuine GE Appliance part is used. If this happens, the dispenser will not work and the display may read "Leak Detected".

Refrigerator – RPWFE operation and troubleshooting.

How to reset GE refrigerator water filter light?

Many refrigerators with a filter have a "replace filter" indicator light for the water filter cartridge on the dispenser.
1. This light will turn orange to tell you that to replace the filter soon.
2. The filter cartridge should be replaced when the replace filter indicator light turns red or if the flow of water to the dispenser or icemaker decreases.
3. Green (or no light): The light will either disappear or turn green. Both are considered normal.
After you change the filter, you must press and hold the RESET WATER FILTER pad until the red light goes off. The light will either disappear or turn green. If you do not hold the pad in, the red light will stay on. Also, if you hold the pad in for a long period of time the light may go off and then come back on.
A power outage can reset the timed function. If the light does not turn orange or red after 6 months, this can be normal if power had been disconnected or there was a power outage.
