Every year on March 22, World Water Day reminds us that clean water is
essential to health, dignity, and opportunity. It is a moment to reflect on
the global water crisis, raise awareness of water sustainability, and
support efforts that help communities gain reliable access to safe drinking
water.
For
Waterdrop
, this mission has always been deeply meaningful. Water is not only at the
center of what we do, but also at the center of a healthier future we hope
to help build. This year, Waterdrop proudly marks the ninth year of
partnership with The Water Project, continuing a shared commitment to
improving access to clean water for communities in need.
As we recognize World Water Day, we also celebrate what long-term
collaboration can achieve: real, measurable change for families, schools,
and communities.
What Is World Water Day?
World Water Day
is a global observance dedicated to highlighting the importance of
freshwater and inspiring action to address water-related challenges around
the world.
In 2026, the theme of World Water Day is “Where water flows, equality
grows.” The campaign focuses on the connection between water, women, and
gender equality, emphasizing that access to safe water is not only an
environmental issue but also a matter of social justice.
Across many regions, women and girls are primarily responsible for
collecting water for their families. Limited access to clean water can
therefore affect education, health, economic opportunities, and overall
gender equality.
World Water Day raises awareness about key global water issues, including:
- access to safe drinking water
- water scarcity and climate challenges
- sanitation and hygiene infrastructure
- sustainable water management
- the impact of water access on women and gender equality
More importantly, it encourages individuals, communities, and organizations
to turn awareness into action by supporting clean water initiatives,
education programs, and sustainable solutions that benefit everyone.
Why Clean Water Still Matters Around the World
Access to clean water affects nearly every part of life. Safe water supports
health, education, food preparation, hygiene, and overall well-being.
In many regions of the world, however, safe drinking water is still
difficult to obtain. In parts of Africa, including rural communities in
Kenya, families often rely on distant rivers, seasonal streams, or shared
wells that may not provide consistently safe water.
For many households, collecting water is a daily responsibility that can
take hours of walking under harsh conditions. In most cases, women and girls
carry this responsibility, traveling long distances with heavy containers
just to bring water home for basic needs.
When communities lack reliable access to clean water, the challenges can
include:
- ong journeys to collect water, often several kilometers each day
-
exposure to unsafe water sources, increasing the risk of waterborne
diseases
-
imited time for school or work, especially for children who help fetch
water
- greater physical and social burdens on women and girls
-
slower community development due to limited health and economic
opportunities
In places like rural Kenya, improving access to safe drinking water can
transform daily life. Reliable water sources help reduce health risks, free
up time for education and work, and support more stable and resilient
communities. Clean water is more than a basic necessity. It is a foundation
for health, opportunity, and gender equality.
Waterdrop and The Water Project: 9 Years of Partnership
This year, Waterdrop proudly
celebrates nine years of partnership
with The Water Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving
access to clean and reliable water in Kenya.
For Waterdrop, this partnership represents more than a shared mission. It
reflects a long-term commitment to creating meaningful change through
consistent action. Over the past nine years, Waterdrop, as one of the key
supporters/donators, has supported clean water projects that have helped
bring safer water to more than 900,000 people and supported 2,600+ monitored
water points in local communities.
The impact goes far beyond water itself. With more reliable access to safe
water, schools can better support students, families face fewer
water-related health risks, and women and girls can spend less time
collecting water and more time on education, work, and daily life.
We remain committed to supporting clean water access around the world.
Because lasting change starts with something essential: safe water for every
community. "Every water purification unit sold provides a day of clean water
for African students."
A Real Example of Impact: Emachembe Primary School in Western Kenya
A powerful example of this partnership in action is
Emachembe Primary School
in Western Kenya, where a completed water project is already improving daily
life for students and staff.
With a new borehole well now in service, the school has access to a safe and
reliable water source that supports everyday needs on campus. Alongside the
water point, new latrines and handwashing stations were also installed, and
both students and staff received support in sanitation and hygiene
practices.
The impact is already visible in the school’s daily routine. One student
shared, “I will no longer get tired of carrying water from a distant water
point,” and said the change would help students “concentrate on learning”
instead of leaving campus to search for water.
Teachers have also seen the difference. According to feedback in the update,
having water close to students and staff helps reduce time loss during the
school day, supports the lunch program, improves sanitation standards, and
may help lower absenteeism linked to waterborne illness.
How Clean Water Changes Communities
Reliable access to clean water can transform daily life in powerful ways.
Better Health
Safer water reduces exposure to contamination and supports healthier daily
routines for families and children.
More Time for Education
When water is easier to access, children spend less time collecting it and
more time learning and participating in school.
Greater Stability for Families and Schools
Reliable water access allows families and schools to invest more time and
energy into work, caregiving, teaching, and community life.
More Opportunity for Women and Girls
In many regions, women and girls are responsible for collecting water.
Improved access reduces this burden and supports education and economic
participation.
Clean water alone does not solve every challenge, but it creates the
foundation for healthier and more resilient communities.
Why Long-Term Water Partnerships Matter
World Water Day inspires reflection, but meaningful impact depends on what
happens beyond the day itself. Sustainable progress is built through
consistency, trust, and long-term collaboration.
Long-term partnerships allow organizations to:
- maintain support for communities over time
- implement durable infrastructure solutions
- provide ongoing training and maintenance support
For Waterdrop, nine years of partnership with The Water Project reflects our
long-term commitment to water stewardship. It demonstrates that clean water
advocacy is not just a message for one day—it is an ongoing responsibility.
